LOCAL ELECTIONS
Proposition A (Neighborhood Parks Bond) VOTE YES
Everyone should support Proposition A. It provides $185 million in bonds to refurbish and update neighborhood parks throughout San Francisco. The breakdown of where the money is going looks like this: $117.4 million for repairs and renovations to 12 neighborhood parks; $11.4 million to replace and repair restrooms; $33.5 million for projects on San Francisco Port land; $8 million for reconstruction of city playfields; $5 million for trail restoration; $5 million for an Opportunity Fund to allow neighborhoods to repair benches and toilets; $4 million for Park Forestry; and $185,000 for audits to make sure the money is spent correctly. Parks provide a wonderful place to visit on warm California days (and even on cold, foggy days) and we should do whatever is necessary to keep them green, safe, and clean.
Proposition B (Deferred Retirement for Police Officers) VOTE YES
The police department of San Francisco is facing a shortage of new police officers during the next few years brought about by retirements and attrition. Proposition B allows police officers who are at least 50 years old and have served for at least 25 years to continue working for three more years with regular pay and benefits. Their earned pension checks would be held and placed in a special account with an annual assured 4 percent interest rate. There will be no additional costs to San Francisco taxpayers, and the program will be reviewed by the Board of Supervisors after three years. Although this seems to be a short term answer to a larger problem, we believe that keeping more police officers on the streets of San Francisco, particularly those that are trained and experienced, is a good idea.
Proposition C (Alcatraz Conversion Project) VOTE NO
This Proposition would allow a white domed conference center for non violent conflict resolution, a statue of St. Francis, a labyrinth, a medicine wheel, and multimedia centers to be built on top of a vacant, run down prison on an island with no water in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. It just seems like a strange way to spend tax payer funds.
